What is a pressure gauge?
pressure gauge

A pressure gauge is a device that measures the pressure (intensity) of a fluid. It typically consists of a dial or digital display that indicates the pressure, along with a sensor that measures it and converts it into an electrical signal that the display can read. Monitoring the pressure value of a hydraulic system keeps a check on the building pressure within the system. A hydraulic system is designed to work in a set pressure range, so it is crucial to ensure that the pressure gauge is rated for the operating range. Pressure gauges typically consist of a pressure-sensitive element (like a bourdon tube or diaphragm) connected to a measuring mechanism and display such as a dial or digital readout. The pressure-sensitive element deforms under the pressure of the gas or liquid, and this deformation is converted into a readable measurement by the measuring mechanism.

What are common pressure gauge sizes?

The pressure gauge dial size often ranges from 1 ½ inches (40mm) to 16 inches (400mm). The size is typically based on the needs of individual applications. Most commonly used gauges across industrial HVAC, marine, and oil & gas markets, range from 1 ½ inches (40mm) to 6 inches (150mm).

What is the difference between a high pressure gauge and a low pressure gauge?

The pressure gauge is divided into vacuum gauge, pressure vacuum gauge, micro pressure gauge, low pressure gauge, medium pressure gauge and high pressure gauge according to its measuring range. The vacuum gauge is used to measure the pressure value less than atmospheric pressure; the pressure vacuum gauge is used to measure the pressure value less than and greater than the atmospheric pressure; the micro pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure value less than 60000 Pa; the low pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure value of 0~6MPa; the medium pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure value of 10~60MPa; the high pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure value above 100MPa.

Pressure Gauge Products FAQ

Q: How do you measure pressure with a pressure gauge?

A: The gauge pressure is Pg = hρg and is found by measuring h. An open-tube manometer has one side open to the atmosphere. (a) Fluid depth must be the same on both sides, or the pressure each side exerts at the bottom will be unequal and there will be flow from the deeper side.

Q: What is the most commonly used pressure gauge?

A: A bourdon tube is the most commonly used pressure gauge. It is a mechanical instrument that measures the pressure without an electric supply. It is made of steel to resist wear and corrosion. A bourdon tube pressure gauge can measure pressure from 0.6 to 7000 bar (8 to 10000 psi).

Q: What type of gauge is most commonly used to measure pressure?

A: The tube is connected to a pointer so that pressure fluctuations are indicated on a calibrated scale on the dial. This type of analog pressure gauge works very well for most applications, particularly those involving medium to very high pressures.

Q: What is the difference between a dial gauge and a pressure gauge?

A: Dial gauges work best in general and static applications and may not be suited for harsh operating environments. Digital pressure gauges feature a robust construction that handles mechanical vibration and is easy to read, especially in dim environments.

Q: How do I choose a pressure gauge?

A: To properly select a pressure gauge, consider the gauge process, range, environment, accuracy, dial size, connection and mounting requirements. Environmental considerations include ambient temperature, air-borne particulate, condensation, humidity, water and chemicals, all of which can affect gauge performance.

Q: What is a pressure gauge also called?

A: The pressure gauge is also known as pressure meters or vacuum gauges. A device that uses the surface area and weight of a liquid column to measure and indicate pressure is known as a manometer. Most gauges calculate the pressure relative to atmospheric pressure as the zero point.

Q: Which is better analog or digital pressure gauge?

A: A calibrated digital pressure gauge stays calibrated much more reliably than a pressure gauge with analog output. Digital calibration is done using software, so it's much more precise.

Q: What is the difference between a pressure gauge and a flow meter?

A: Flow meters measure fluid flow rate, while pressure meters measure fluid pressure. Both types of meters are important tools for monitoring and controlling fluid systems in various industries and applications.

Q: How accurate is a dial pressure gauge?

A: For instance, a dial pressure gauge with a range of 0 ... 100psi and an accuracy of ±1% F.S. exhibits a tolerance of ±1.0 psi at any point on the measurement scale.

Q: Which is better dry or liquid filled pressure gauge?

A: While some customers are concerned about the extra cost of liquid filling for a pressure gauge, the long-term payoff is clear: Better protection against vibration, pulsation, corrosion, and moisture makes for a longer-lasting, more reliable instrument.

Q: What is the difference between a wet and dry pressure gauge?

A: A liquid-filled pressure gauge is typically filled with glycerine, which coats the internals of the gauge and fills the dial. If the vessel's pressure readings are volatile, a dry pressure gauge may be a bit jumpy with spikes and pulsations, while a liquid-filled pressure gauge will be much easier to read.
